Antique or Vintage? Helpful Terms to Define Your Style

Need help navigating what's vintage, antique, retro, kitsch and even modern? As vintage enthusiasts we know a few things about how to decipher what's what... Here's a quick overview of some of the most frequently used terminology to help you on your search for the perfect find!

Navigating the nuances between terms like vintage, antique, retro, kitsch and even modern can be a little bit tricky, as these terms are sometimes used interchangeably by enthusiasts, collectors, and stores alike. As fans of all things vintage and antique, we’ve provided a quick overview of some of the most frequently thrown around terminology, to help you better refine your search for furniture, apparel and art to match your unique style.

Vintage

The term "vintage" is probably one of the most ubiquitous descriptors you’ll come across when searching for items such art, furniture, or apparel from a previous era/decade. Literally translated, it means “of age,” but opinions vary on what that actually means in terms of years. Generally speaking, it applies to items that are around 40-50 years old (or 20-100 years old for outliers).

Vintage enthusiasts seek out these pieces for their timeless appeal, quality craftsmanship, and the sense of history they embody. Vintage furniture offers a unique blend of history, character, and enduring style that can really add heart and interest to a space, while vintage apparel can help elevate your wardrobe with classic silhouettes that standout from today’s fast fashion trends.

Whether it's a classic leather jacket, a mid-century modern sofa, or a vintage record player, these items offer a tangible connection to the past and embody an era's unique look. If you're looking for reasons to buy vintage, we covered some of our favorites here!

Antique

The term “antique” is loosely used to describe furniture, art, apparel, and sculptures that are between 100-300 years old. Because many of these items were made by skilled craftman with the intent to last generations, these pieces are valued for their quality construction, aesthetic appeal, and/or ties to history. Antique furniture in good condition is increasingly hard to come by as the demand for them grows, and it is our absolute joy to curate collections for our customers in DC.

Retro

Retro, short for retrospective, or repro clothing is typically a newly made copy of an older garment. Retro styles typically reference the mid-20th century, but can go up until the late 1990s! A good rule of thumb is that the term covers styles that date back to 20-40 years.

Retro furniture offers a unique blend of nostalgia and style, making it a sought-after choice for interior enthusiasts. Its playful and vibrant aesthetic evokes a sense of fun and optimism. Whether you're aiming for a vintage-inspired living room or a retro-themed kitchen, these pieces offer a playful and expressive way to connect with the past while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.

Kitsch

While the term “kitsch” may not have the most favorable of beginnings (it translates roughly from German to “trash” or “rubbish”), kitsch offers a playful and nostalgic escape from the ordinary. Characterized by its bold colors, exaggerated forms, and often sentimental themes, kitsch embraces a sense of whimsy and fun for interior spaces, whether it's a toy collection, a set of fuzzy dice, or the classic painting of dogs playing poker. While viewed by some as the opposite of high art, we love the way it has been transformed and elevated by collectors into eclectic art and interior design.

Modern

Modern style is often confused with contemporary design, but they are distinct entities. Originating in the mid-20th century, modern design emphasizes clean lines, functionality, and a minimalist aesthetic. Characterized by its use of natural materials, neutral colors, and a focus on form over ornamentation, modern style embodies a sense of simplicity and sophistication.
